The Costa de la Luz or 'Coast of light' is at the western
part of the Andalucía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic.
The Costa de La Luz and in the
South the Costa del Sol make up the whole southern region of Andalucia, part from the region
of Almeria. It is an area of huge
contrasts, ranging from the built-up seafront resorts along the coast near
Malaga to the quieter but beautiful beaches of the western Costa de La Luz and
the breathtaking historic Andalucian cities of Seville, Cordoba, Granada and
Cadiz.
The coastal areas roughly split into two halves, either side of Gibraltar
, with the Costa del Sol to the east being the most visited part of Spain since
the boom in package holidays in the 60s.
West of Gibraltar is the stretch of coast known Costa de Ia Luz (iuz meaning
light), whose popularity with British home-buyers and holidaymakers
is growing as the Costa del Sol and the Algarve (further to the west) get increasingly
busy
Meanwhile, inland you get a feel for the Andalucian way of life, which is
strongly laced with a Moorish flavour. Seville, Granada,
Jerez de Ia Frontera (famous for its sherry-making), Cadiz,
Huelva and Cordoba all boast a heavy dose of history and culture, being packed
with museums, churches, mosques, grand buildings.
