Menorca guide to Menorca Spain
Menorca is more peaceful than any of the other Balearic
Islands only 25 miles from its neighbour Mallorca. Menorca is an oasis of sandy coves with over 120 sandy beaches. Menorca is often claimed to be one of the most beautiful islands in the whole of the Mediterranean, with strong British links dating back to the times of Nelson. It takes its name from being smaller than nearby island of Majorca.
Although most people come for the climate and the beaches, the island has quite a few historic sights as well. Of particular note are the Paleo-Christian basilicas and monuments from the Talayotic culture. Another interesting sight is the Fort Marlboro which is a good example of British military architecture.
The harbour at Mao, the island capital. The whole island is a European Biological Reserve which means that big hotel building has been kept to a minimum in most of the resorts. It is a relatively quiet, family oriented island.
Lingering British influence is seen in the Minorcans' taste for gin, which during the local fiestas the islanders mix with bitter lemon to make the popular Pomada. Also famous is Queso Mahón, a cheese typical of the island.
