La Gomera guide to La Gomera Spain
La Gomera is one of the smaller Canary Islands and its lush greenery means
that its popular with walkers and those wanting to get away from it all
For a rather different Canary Island experience, you could try La Gomera.
Christopher Columbus dropped anchor here in San Sebastian, La Gomeras tiny
capital and harbour, on his way to the New World. At just 14 miles across and
16 long, the island is an extinct volcano and is still comparatively wild,
ringed by steep cliffs, crammed with high peaks and covered in lush green foliage.
The islands isolation and lack of golden sandy beaches keeps the Tenerife-type
package tourist at bay. Visitors come here mainly for the fantastic and dramatic
scenery most evident in islands national park, Garajonay, with its highest
peak rising to almost 5,000ft.
With a population of some 18,000, many of the inhabitants show the typical features of their Guanche ancestors. Other Canarians are said to poke fun at isolated islanders but it is truly an ideal place to escape mass tourism. Part of San Sebastian still retains a touch of colonial chic and has a few pretty, Spanish Baroque and Moorish-style houses built around shady courtyards
