Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Spain
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has something for everyone. Mediterranean in atmosphere,
despite being just over 100 miles off the African coast, Gran Canaria is the
third largest island on the Canary islands archipelago. The sunshine is blinding
and beautiful and it hits you full on when you land. Its an ideal place for
a winter break away from Englands grey skies.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has the look and feel of a historic Spanish town,
but dont go calling it just Las Palmas. Many local people insist
on giving the town its full title because of the myriad other Spanish places
similarly named. With its population of 400,000, more than half of the islands
inhabitants live here.
The city is about six miles long starting at its point furthest north
in the neck of land of La Isleta and finishing up in the south. It is distributed
over two different levels: a lower zone that runs right along the seafront
to the east together with Vegueta, the old quarter of the city which dates
back some 500 years. Las Canteras Beach, on Las Paimas de Gran Canarias western
side, is a popular and lively place day and night.
